What is this place?

In writing down and organizing my chat-based and otherwise roleplay (RP) characters, both past and present, my hopes are to catalogue a bit of my personality as seen through the characters I play. Moreso, maybe, I'd just like to have all of the information and history in one place. It would be nice for each page to have the character's history and future (or future-intended) stories as well as general information, but although that's the eventual intent, the effort required to do so will be pretty great. It's in the works!

Why the name?

There is no real reason for the name 'Hollow Earth Society' aside from a) me needing a name for the website and b) as a geologist, the very concept of a hollow earth and the fact that such a society existed thrills the pants off of me. It is a placeholder for the required domain name, although, as always, if necessary I could likely think up a deeper meaning for it.

The Beginnings

I have been chatroom roleplaying (RPing) since I was 12 years old, in 1995. My beginnings were in Yahoo! Chat. The roleplaying section was called "Ayenee" ( http://www.ayenee.org/phpbb2/portal.php or http://www.ayenee.net ) by its users at the time, a shortened and better sounding name for the "Arts and Entertainment" section. All chat was held in user-created rooms. In-depth websites sprang up with guidelines of proper etiquette and rules. One, in particular became more or less the accepted base for the chat by the citizens of Ayeneee.

The majority of my RP has been freeform, which, at its simplest, means 'no rules'. It is a doctrine of respect and cooperation between players to create what I feel is a more personal RP. Problems naturally arise in this system on occasion, particularly when it comes to fighting. When I came to Ayenee, two accepted fighting "styles" existed-- T1 and T2, though T1 was by far the most used.

The method in T1 fighting was simply to get your posts in the fastest. For example:

  • Demona slashes at you with her sword.
  • Demona slices into your arm.
  • Kerrick blocks with his shield.

The character Kerrick would lose this particular strike, and supposedly be sliced in the arm. Attacks were not usually even this specific, however, and most posts gave no clarification as to where the strikes were aimed. This caused problems. Slow connection speeds and copy/paste maneuvers bred complaints and, for the most part, the results of the battles were completely ignored. And for good reason.

The T2 system, however, was based on descriptive and usually lengthy posts in which one allows one's opponent as much time as needed to respond. Although player cooperation was still an issue and many in-character (IC) fights dissolved into out-of-character (OOC) squabbles, T2 proved itself to be the better alternative and gradually gained popularity. So much so that, eventually, those using the T1 system were often branded "noobs" and ignored.

My RP haunt moved rather abruptly some time in early 1997 when a friend at Yahoo! introduced me to another site: The Keep. The Keep would be a favourite place of mine for about 7 years, until late 2004. I visited other chatrooms sporadically during this time, but never developed a presence in them, and conducted sparse RP in Yahoo! Club forums.

The Keep promoted RP with somewhat longer posts and a somewhat more sophisticated RP style. It was firmly based in freeform RP and only rules concerning harassment, improper posts, or offensive characters, etc, were enforced. Freeform RP law is carried out by the masses; if your RP is not up to par, the majority will either berate or ignore you. Regardless, they will not play with you.

My time on The Keep was a time of immense character development. From ages 13 to 19 (approximately) I put together and eventually honed my characters. Some came and went, but some have survived the years and a switch to a new chatroom, Shattered Realms.

Shattered Realms, more commonly called "Shards" by members, is a strict RP environment that allows users to create their own "hubs". Each hub is, essentially, its own little universe. Rules for the hubs are specifically laid out, multiple rooms with their own descriptions are created, and more often than not outside forums exist for further hub discussion, both IC and OOC.

There is no doubt that some of my most mature and thought-out characters exist in Shards. My hubs of choice are currently Salem Institute, a school in a Harry-Potteresque universe, and New York City, an X-Men mutant hub based, as you could probably guess, in New York City. A fantasy hub called Riverwatch and Hogwarts, a hub with too-close-for-comfort ties with the Harry Potter series, were locations of my previous attempts at roleplay, along with two hubs which no longer exist. One was a science-fiction hub featuring a cast of insectoid, human, and other alien creatures, and the other was created soley for the eternal battle between werewolves and vampires. Unfortunately I cannot remember the names of either.

I've forged a lot of good relationships with a lot of people since I began roleplaying so long ago. Every conversation I've had with them is appreciated, especially those during the more difficult times in my life. They've had a lot of patience, and I like to think that even though I'll never meet them, we'll still be friends for life.

The characters contained in these archives are organized by the chat in which they were created, and subsequently the age at which I created them. Following the links below will lead you to the different databases.
